Service Rates

As a not-for-profit cooperative, Doniphan Electric Cooperative’s rates are designed to cover the cost of providing service. These rates are approved by our board of directors and include three primary parts: a consumer charge, an energy charge and a Power Cost Adjustment (PCA). To understand your total electric bill and what impacts it, let’s look at these one at a time. The fixed monthly consumer charge covers the costs associated with providing electricity to your home. This includes equipment, materials, labor and operating costs necessary to serve each meter in Doniphan Electric’s service territory. The consumer charge is the same for similar customers and costs are shared equally across the membership. The second component is the energy charge. The energy charge varies from month to month based on how much energy is consumed. Of course, the amount of energy you use varies from month to month and is strongly impacted by temperatures. Although no one controls the weather, energy consumption is an area that you have some control over by actively reducing energy use. The last component of your bill is the PCA. The PCA goes up and down monthly with the changing price of wholesale power. It is notable that wholesale power is by far the biggest cost for Doniphan Electric. As a member-owner of our electric cooperative and under K.S.A 66-104d(g), members have the right to petition a review of rates by the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) within one year of a rate change.
